What’s the difference between an osteopath and a physio?
Many patients are not sure of the difference, but in the UK, osteopaths and physiotherapists both treat the same types of musculoskeletal conditions, just differing slightly in their approach.
Osteopaths focus on the connection between the body's structure and function. They use hands-on techniques like joint manipulation, massage, and stretching to improve mobility, relieve pain, and promote overall health. They also consider lifestyle factors such as posture stress, and nutrition.
Physiotherapists concentrate on rehabilitation and recovery. They use exercise-based treatments, movement re-education, and manual therapy to restore mobility and strength, often after injury, surgery, or medical conditions. Their approach is more focused on specific physical impairments and rehabilitation.
My particular approach to osteopathy incorporates the best of both worlds. As well as using traditional osteopathic techniques, I also research and recommend the latest science-based rehabilitation protocols for different musculoskeletal injuries.
I have a particular interest in sports injuries, and have published detailed guides to help my patients recover from calf muscle strains, hamstring injuries and ankle sprains . These guides, along with other useful information can be seen in my blog.
I’m also big on nutrition and supplements, both for general wellbeing and optimising injury recovery.
