Hip Stretches

Here at Osteo Studio, I aim to help my patients help themselves with their problems. One of the best ways to do this is to engage in exercises as well as Osteopathic treatments. If you have been told that you have a problem with your hip movements, then these are two exercises that will help restore your range of movement.

In my experience, when patients have hips that aren’t moving properly they have usually lost a combination of backward movement (extension) and inward movement (internal rotation). As well as affecting the hip directly , a loss of these movements can have a negative impact on the knees and low back, so it’s worth working on improving the hip movements with a couple of simple exercises.

There are more complicated stretches, but these are chosen because they are simple to understand and easy to perform. If you experience anything more than mild discomfort (muscle stretch) from these exercises then don’t do them.

Stretch 1 - Stretching the hip flexors - improving extension.

Please note, with this exercise, it is the rear leg which is being stretched, so focus your attention on the stretch in the thigh of the rear leg.

Stretch 2 - Improving internal rotation of the hip.
